Joy is a Magnet. My 40 years back insights.

Have you ever noticed how you are naturally drawn to certain people? Not because of what they are saying, or what they are doing, but simply because of how you feel in their presence.

In a previous post, I shared a morning realization: True joy isn’t something we have to create or search for outside of ourselves. It is our true home. When we finally stop searching the external world for peace and instead rest in our Anandamaya Kosha (our Bliss Body), a profound shift happens.

But this shift doesn't just heal us internally. It transforms how we interact with the world. Joy is our secret weapon; it is our magnet.

A Personal Turning Point Story.

I learned this firsthand when I was 27 years old. My entire world felt like it was falling apart—not only was I going through a painful divorce, but the country I grew up in, the Soviet Union, was also in the brink of the collapse. I had fallen into a deep depression, feeling completely down and unmotivated.

I was incredibly lucky to have supportive friends who helped me move out of my city and gently encouraged me to find the strength to start over.

Everything seemed to happen at once. My life completely turned around: I moved to a brand new city and entered graduate school of physics. Amidst all of this massive external change, uncertainty, and academic rigor, I was introduced to yoga for the very first time.

After just a few classes, something inside me clicked. I didn't just feel physically better—I felt an overwhelming, undeniable sense of joy. Despite the chaos of the world around me, it felt like I was finally coming back home to where I truly belonged. And almost immediately, the most remarkable thing happened: I started attracting new friends and romantic partners like never before. People were drawn to me. I was surprised to observe it, but I did not have time to analyze and deeply understand why. I simply took it for granted.

Only now, when I am preparing for tomorrow workshop, and I am contemplating on the present dramas of my students, I am having insights of that time of almost 40 years ago. But looking back, I realize I was experiencing this exact phenomenon. By connecting with that inner joy, I had completely changed my vibrations from sadness to joy.

When we look at this through both the lens of modern science and ancient yogic philosophy, we uncover a beautiful symmetry about why doing our own inner work is the greatest gift we can offer to our relationships. We are going to talk more about that during the workshop tomorrow.

The Joy Magnetism doesn't just apply to relationships; it applies to the every aspect of our lives. When we operate from a place of true joy, we are no longer broadcasting a signal of lack or desperation. We show up to new opportunities, academic challenges, or careers with a relaxed nervous system and a sense of inner completeness.

When you cultivate joy and drop those protective walls, your perspective widens. You notice the synchronicity. You have the energy and the clarity to take the right step at exactly the right time. The heavy lifting of navigating major life transitions—like diving into rigorous academic studies or moving across the country—requires immense Prana or Energy. Joy provides that life force, making you resilient and clear-headed enough to seize opportunities when they arise.
